Explore the intersection of nature and art at Gadsden Arts with Aviary: International Quilting and Fiber Art, organized by Studio Art Quilt Associates. From intricate stitches to vibrant textures, each work reflects the artists’ profound connection to the world around us.
Join us for our opening celebration of Aviary: International Quilting and Fiber Art on Friday, September 20, 2024, from 5 pm to 7:30 pm with a curator’s talk at 6:30 pm. Marvel at exquisite fiber art from over 16 countries, all exploring varied interpretations of birds. Free admission for GACM members and children ages 17 & under; non-member adults welcome for just $5.

Discover Art Series
Art Café – Thornton Dial & Jack Whitten
Thursday, September 5, 2024 | 10 AM – 11:30 AM
Join us for a morning of indulgence and inspiration! Savor delicious pastries with special coffee and tea recipes by The White Rabbit Market, and hear the remarkable journeys of Thornton Dial, Sr., and Jack Whitten, both from Bessemer, Alabama. These men followed vastly different paths to achieve national acclaim as 20th century Black American artists. Also learn about Gadsden Arts’ early days as a collecting museum, with some favorite “behind the scenes” stories.

Discover Art Series
Dine & Discover Luncheon – Birds in Contemporary Art
Thursday, October 10, 2024 | 12 PM – 1:30 PM
Enjoy a luncheon with friends, and gourmet coffee and tea with recipe demonstrations by The White Rabbit Market. Hear the fascinating stories of some of SAQA’s international fiber artists, and interviews with Jim Miller, photographer, and Brenda Francis, painter, both of whom celebrate Florida’s bird life in art.

Artist’s Workshop with Leslie Cohen

Fabric artist Leslie Cohen invites you to join her in creating your very own sculptural quilted bird! This workshop is inspired by our major exhibition, Aviary: International Quilting and Fiber Art, organized by Studio Art Quilt Associates, on display from September 20 through December 14. During the workshop, participants will explore some of the techniques showcased in the exhibition.

20-Minute Art Talk
Every first Wednesday of the month @ 12 PM
Join museum staff for a 20-minute Art Talk, a fun and informal conversation comparing two artworks every first Wednesday at noon. This month we will be examining Jack Whitten’s Lapsang, on loan from Art Bridges, and pieces by Thornton Dial, Sr. from the Gadsden Arts Permanent Collection. If you can’t visit the museum in person, you can join us live on Zoom to be a part of the discussion, ask questions, or share comments with fellow art enthusiasts.

This month in the ArtZone!
Every Saturday 10AM – 4:30PM
Our new exhibition, Aviary: International Quilting and Fiber Art, organized by Studio Art Quilt Associates, means brand new ArtZone activities! This major exhibition features international fiber artists depicting birds they admire in myriad ways using a wide variety of materials and techniques. Kick off the school year with fun Saturdays in our FREE art-making studio from 10 am – 4:30 pm. Enjoy making a bird bracelet, weaving, and painting with anything but a paintbrush. Continue the fun at home with our FREE Art@Home Kits!

Another Art Trip in the books!
Gadsden Arts’ Art Day Trip to Jacksonville was a blast! Participants explored two different museums – The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens and Jacksonville’s Museum of Contemporary Art. In between tours, we enjoyed a relaxing lunch at Iguana on Park. Thank you all who joined us on this art adventure – we hope you had a great time.
