Gadsden Arts is known for hosting quality exhibitions offering cultural and historical content, and work by master artists. These exhibitions, made accessible through interpretive programs and free admission, offer enrichment for area residents and school groups while also attracting visitors from a distance.
In the new Munroe Family Community Gallery, Gadsden Arts has the capacity to host exhibitions of work by art students, local artists and crafts people. For many, this will be their first time exhibiting work in a museum.
The Jean Gard Fletcher Museum Shop expansion allows Gadsden Arts to offer more of our region’s creative people the opportunity to exhibit and sell work, and attract more visitors who seek affordable, unique art and crafts in a beautiful setting.
Families need fun, affordable, community outings. The new ArtZone allows families to experience art in an active way - by making some. Families are able to visit the Woodward Family Children's Studio during regular hours, and with a little guidance from trained volunteers, make a work of art to take home with them. For some, this will be the first experience with art, and could lead to increased interest in other museum programs. The new space also features
the Jane and Alex Hinson Children’s Art Gallery with magnetic walls, letting children install their work for others to see in an ever-changing exhibition. Click here for hours of the ArtZone.
Gadsden Arts preserves cultural heritage for current and future generations through its Permanent Collection of art. The focus of the collection is contemporary art from the Southeastern United States, which includes a collection of Southern Vernacular Art. With the acquisition of similar work by the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) in 2015, Southern Vernacular Art is recognized as some of the most important American Contemporary Art of the 20th Century. The designated Bates Permanent Collection Gallery allows for year-round exhibitions of work from the Collection.
This project meets the need for more space to house our collection when it is not on view, crate objects for museum loans, store object crates and pedestals, and exhibit works from the collection for the benefit of our community. The Temporary Storage in the Nick and Wendy Adams Collections Area was completed in late 2016. The Margaret M. Thrower Collections Area and Vault have been constructed and now await furnishings, which will be installed Fall 2018. See the digital rendering below.
