Mark Lindquist 40-year Retrospective

The Gadsden Arts Center is honored to host Mark Lindquist, a forty-year retrospective exhibition of the work of this legendary woodturner and wood sculptor. Recipient of the 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association of Woodturners and a fellow of the American Craft Council, Lindquist’s tireless exploration of the expressive possibilities of this medium has helped to define its past, present, and future in the fine art world. In 1995, the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum honored Lindquist by hosting his 25-year retrospective exhibition. His work has been acquired by major museums in the United States and Europe including the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington, DC), High Museum of Art (Atlanta, GA), and Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York). The exhibition will present the broadest range of Lindquist’s work ever seen in one venue, a major cultural event for our region. For more information, visit www.lindquiststudios.com.

If you are an artist living within 200 miles of Quincy, Florida, or a former Gadsden County resident, you are invited to apply to participate in the 22nd Annual Art in Gadsden juried exhibition and sale of fine art. This exhibition draws visitors and patrons from across the region each year, showcasing art from over 100 selected artists. New and returning, established and emerging artists are welcome to apply.

Alla Prima is an exhibition featuring the work of Tallahassee painter and teacher John Stanford, and nine of his current students. This exhibition is characterized by the strong emotional subtext of the works and a focus on light and color, which is the result of the artists’ use of the North Florida landscape as inspiration. The exhibition includes works by artists Kathleen Carter, Jennifer Clinard, Deborah DeBack-Wright, Hank Fleck, Keith McCullogh, Charles Manning, Jill Quadagno, John Stanford, Edward White, and Adeline Wilkes. Stalking the Wild Landscape: Plein Air Painting by Lynn Priestley & Julie Bowland
January 14–March 21, 2011Zoe Golloway Exhibit Hall An exhibition of works by artists Lynn Priestley and Julie Bowland featuring plein-air landscapes depicting the unique vistas of the Southeastern United States. Both artists exhibit a close affinity to their subject matter and a focus on expressionistic color. Lynn Priestley explores the dialogue of color within nature using applied color theory, while Julie Bowland’s landscapes express the feelings behind natural environments through innovative uses of color and vigorous brushstrokes. Eluster Richardson: Painted Quilts
Sara May Love Gallery Tallahassee artist Eluster Richardson is known for unique and expressive paintings that focus on both cultural and familial connections. This exhibition highlights Richardson’s concentration on quilts and the rich tradition of quilting in the South. Richardson’s paintings will be exhibited alongside antique quilts illustrating quilting culture of the past and present, evoking an emotional and visceral response to the sense of home and tradition that crosses all boundaries.
April 1–May 28, 2011Zoe Golloway Exhibit Hall An exhibition of work by artist Ben Bivins, showcasing the complexities of life through the eyes of the artist. Through a range of styles, from realism to abstraction to the non-objective, Bivins explores the search and struggles of life. The freshness and sense of resolution that characterizes the exhibition is found through Bivins’ spontaneity and focus on the full exploration of the artistic process. Frequently working in series, Bivins aims to explore and push the medium of painting to expand the mind of both the artist and the viewer.

Out of Pocket III
Sara May Love Gallery For the third time, Gadsden Arts hosts the wildly popular Out of Pocket exhibition. Out of Pocket encourages artists to create artwork on a smaller than customary scale, resulting in original works of art in a variety of media, subjects and styles that are affordably priced for a broad art collecting audience. Heather Parker Paintings
June 10-August 6, 2011Zoe Golloway Exhibit Hall Panama City artist Heather Parker explores the rhythmic communication of lines, shapes and colors through her acrylic paintings. Parker maintains a strong focus on the basic elements of visual communication, creating a dialogue between the real world and her imagination. Influenced by such artists as Gustav Klimt and Paul Klee, Parker endeavors to present her work in an uncomplicated and accessible way, expressing the intertwined nature of one’s life experiences and interactions with others. Mark Lindquist, So Long Frank Lloyd Wright Bowl In the fall of 2010, Gadsden Arts will host the exhibition of work by the internationally renowned woodturner and sculptor, Mark Lindquist, exploring the 40-year evolution of Lindquist's work, from wood vessels and furniture to large-scale totems to abstract photography.
Dean Mitchell, Bookstore, watercolor 15 x 20 inches In July 2008, Gadsden Arts hosted an exhibition of a series of works by Dean Mitchell celebrating the city of New Orleans. In August 2011, Gadsden Arts will host an exhibition featuring new work by the Quincy native.
Eluster Richardson, Quiltmaker Second Study, oil, 36 x 30 In March of 2011, Gadsden Arts will open an exhibition of work by Eluster Richardson. This exhibition highlights Richardson’s concentration on quilts and the tradition of quilting in the South. Vik Muniz, Still Life with Apples, After Cézanne, chromogenic print, 90 x 72 inches In July 2006, Gadsden Arts borrowed works by Vik Muniz from a collection owned by the West Collection. Muniz is an artist whose inventive recreations of well-known images taken from art history and constructed or "remastered from a variety of everyday materials like dirt, sugar, wire, string, and chocolate syrup.
GustavoCastillo, Coconut and Red, watercolor on paper, 30 x 40 inches In October 2005, Gadsden Arts exhibited the work of Gustavo Castillo and Carmen Lagos, two highly acclaimed watercolor artists who produce realistic images with striking luminous quality
Omar Thompson, Shoeshine for Mr. Charlie, mixed media, 48 x 80 x 11 inches In January 2005, Gadsden Arts hosted the exhibition of cermacist and mixed media artist, Omar Thompson. Thompson assembles found objects to present compelling images which recount his and others' experiences of growing up black in America.
Yvonne Tucker, Self-Portrait with Bird, mixed media on board, 2002 In January 2003, noted ceramicist Yvonne Tucker exhibited works with painter Marion McDonald and quilter Qadira Lutfi in an exhibit in the Sara May Love Gallery at Gadsden Arts.
